Visible cracking around a hinge weld is a clear warning sign, but not all damage is obvious. Rust can reduce the thickness of the hinge plate or post wall from behind the surface. A lasting repair begins with checking the complete gate assembly, not simply welding over the first crack that is visible. The gate needs to be evaluated for sag, frame damage, post movement, hinge wear, latch alignment, and clearance at the ground. On powered gates, the operator and safety devices should also be considered before the gate is moved or welded.
Finding the Cause Before Welding
A cracked hinge weld often means the hinge was carrying more stress than it should. That can happen when a gate is too heavy for its hinges, when the post has loosened, when the gate has settled, or when the hinge line was not aligned correctly during the original installation.
Welding a cracked area without correcting the load or alignment may provide a short-term fix, but it does not solve the reason the crack developed. The repair itself may range from rewelding a separated hinge plate to fabricating a new mounting bracket or replacing a worn hinge assembly. Sound metal is prepared before welding so the repair is made to clean, stable material rather than to rust, old failed weld, or thin damaged steel.
In some cases, reinforcement is the practical choice. A gusset, backing plate, or heavier-duty hinge mount can spread the gate load across a larger area of the post or frame. Reinforcement is not automatically necessary, though. Adding steel in the wrong place can interfere with movement, trap moisture, or create a new stress point. The repair should suit the gate's weight, usage, and existing construction.
After welding, the gate should be checked again for swing, latch alignment, and hinge movement. If paint or protective coating was removed during the repair, that exposed area should be addressed to help limit future corrosion.

Check for loose hardware, cracking around welds, rust at hinge mounts, uneven gaps, dragging, and changes in latch alignment. If the gate is automated, do not ignore new operator noises or a gate that begins stopping short. Those symptoms may be caused by hinge drag rather than an operator failure.
Lubrication can help where the hinge design calls for it, but grease will not correct a bent pin, cracked weld, or shifted post. Avoid forcing the gate with equipment or repeatedly slamming it shut. That kind of impact often turns a manageable hinge issue into frame and post damage.
A gate should protect access without becoming another daily task for your crew. If it is sagging, binding, or showing cracks around the hinges, addressing the issue early gives you more repair options and helps keep the entrance safe, functional, and ready for the next workday.
